DHAKA: The 72-hour rail-road-waterways blockade around the country, called by the opposition BNP-led 18-party alliance, started from 6:00am Tuesday, demanding non-party caretaker government to oversee the upcoming 10th general election.
In early hours of the blockade, some activists of Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, tried to bring out a procession in city’s Rampura area at around 7:30am but police foiled the attempt.
After chasing the blockaders, police nabbed some Shibir men.
Rampura thana Officer–in-Charge Kripa Sindhu told confirmed the matter to banglanews. But you did not confirm the number of detainees.
Party’s standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan came up with the announcement of the programme in a press conference at the chairperson’s Gulshan office on Monday evening.
Earlier, the alliance observed 15-day blockade in three spells from November 26 to November 28, from November 30 to December 5 and December 7 to December 12.
Meanwhile, sources said that the blockade might be extended upto the general election on January 5, excluding December 25 for Christmas festival.
Sources also said that the 18-party alliance might ask the countrymen to participate in the non-cooperation movement which would exclude hospitals, press and all the institutions related to medical treatment.
