Three remanded over 55kg gold heist at HSIA

A Dhaka court on Tuesday (September 19) placed three people, including two customs officials, on a three-day remand each over the theft of 55 kilograms of gold from a customs warehouse at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).

The remanded accused are - assistant revenue officers Md Shahidul Islam and Saidur Islam Shahed, and sepoy M. Afzal Hossain.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court passed the order today. 

Mozaffar Hossain, sub-inspector of the Airport police station confirmed the matter.

He said court granted three days' remand after police produced the accused before the court with a 10-day remand plea for them each. 

On September 2, an airport official noticed during regular patrolling that the lock of a particular volt was broken. Later, around 55.51 kilograms of gold worth about Taka 45 crore was reported 'stolen' from the volt of the customs transit go-down

An FIR was lodged with the Airport Thana on September 3 by Mohammad Sohrab Hossain, Assistant Customs Officer of the Preventive team of Dhaka Customs in this regard.

On September 13, eight people including three customs officials were placed on a five-day remand each.
