Odhikar’s Adilur, Elan indicted

DHAKA: Adilur Rahman Khan, Secretary of human rights organization Odhikar, and its director ASM Nasiruddin Elan were indicted for publishing ‘fake, distorted and defamatory’ information.

Cyber Crime Tribunal Judge AKM Shamsul Alam on Wednesday morning framed the charges against the duo and fixed January 22 for the opening statement.

On November 6, AKM Nasiruddin Elan surrendered to the tribunal.

Detectives Branch of police arrested Odhikar’s secretary Adilur Rahman Khan on August 10 for quizzing and he got bail from high court on October 11.

On September 11, the newly-initiated Cyber Crimes Tribunal of Dhaka took the charge into cognizance of publishing ‘fake, distorted and defamatory’ information against Adilur and Odhikar Director AKM Nasiruddin Elan under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act 2006.

On May 5, 2013 law enforcers, in a late night drive, drove out Hefazat-e-Islam from Shapla Chattar premises in city’s Motijheel area during a rally.

Odhikar, a non government organization also claiming as human rights watchdog, published a report that more than 61 people were killed during the ‘Shapla Chattar Crackdown’.

However, police refuted the report and said that many of the victims listed did not exist in reality and a case was soon filed against the duo.
