Bangladesh has welcomed the recent decision by four influential Western nations to formally recognise the Palestinian state, describing it as a positive step toward achieving complete independence for the Palestinian people.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain said the move by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal marked a significant diplomatic development, though he cautioned that the road ahead remains challenging for Palestinians.
“This recognition is certainly a step forward in the journey toward complete independence. However, the Palestinian people still have a long path to walk,” he said during an interview with a private television channel in New York on Sunday (Sept 21), following the announcement by the four countries.
Bangladesh, he added, has consistently stood in solidarity with the Palestinian cause and continues to support its people in their struggle for statehood. “We have always supported the people of Palestine. Naturally, we welcome the decision by these four countries. We believe this is encouraging news,” he said.
The adviser said that with the latest recognition from the UK, Canada, Australia and Portugal, over 150 countries have now extended formal diplomatic recognition to Palestine.
He also mentioned that another major Western power, France, is reportedly preparing to follow suit. Should this materialise, Palestine would be recognised by four of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council — a milestone with potential global ramifications.
“The recognition from these countries has now brought the total number of states directly supporting the Palestinian cause to 151,” the foreign adviser added.
