Next general election possible by 2025: Law Adviser

Law Adviser of the interim government Asif Nazrul said the next national election could be arranged by 2025.

On September 24, after General Waqar-uz-Zaman indicated regarding schedule of the election, this is the first time an advisor has directly commented on it.

Asif Nazrul said, "I think realistically, holding the election can be possible by the next year. There are many factors. This is a preliminary assumption to me."

The law adviser made the remarks when Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, the Chief Editor of Daily Manabzamin, wanted to know about the election timing during a programme titled "Ajker Patrika" hosted by Channel I late Thursday night.

Dr Asif said a search committee will be formed soon to help form the new Election Commission.

“The new Election Commission will then prepare a flawless voters' list and then election will be held”, he said.

Dr. Asif Nazrul while discussing said that the Digital Security Act will be repealed. Besides, he mentioned that he had never said that any journalist would be tried in the International Crimes Tribunal.

At this time, the adviser apologizing to the people for the increase in the price of commodities, he said that the price of vegetables in the local market is so high that the sales have reduced. Due to the flood, supply of eggs has decreased. During the previous government, all was controlled through the syndicate.

In response to another question, Asif Nazrul said, “Mistakes can happen, because I have less experience. But I can say that I did not do wrong knowingly. I may go wrong in principle. But I did not do any work for personal interest.”

Regarding Digital Security Act, Asif Nazrul said, “We are in the process of repealing the Digital Security Act.”
