TANGAIL: JMB member Rakib, 35, who was snatched and later held on Sunday, was killed in a gunfight between his cohorts and law enforcers in Sakhipur of Tangail early Monday.
Rakib was awarded death sentence earlier for the murder of Joseph Gani Gomez Mandal.
Sources said that in a drive law enforcers along with Rakib went to Beltoil area under Mirzapur upazila on Sunday midnight.
Sensing the presence of law enforcers, fellow JMB members opened fire on them to snatch Rakib and in reply joint forces also fired back that triggered a gunfight.
During the time, Rakib was caught in the line of fire, leaving him dead on the spot and three policemen sustained bullet injuries.
Sakhipur Thana Officer-in-Charge Mokhlesur Rahman confirmed the matter to banglanews.
Earlier on Sunday, three death-row convicts of Jama`atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) escaped from a prison van at Trishal upazila in Mymensingh.
A police man was killed and two injured when JMB cadres snatched the prisoners at gunpoint in a daring attack in broad daylight.
Later, police in a drive held Rakib from Taktarchala area on the day at around 3:15pm.
