RANGPUR: BNP-backed candidate Noor Mohammad Mondal won in upazila polls at Pirganj in Rangpur district on Monday.
According to the unofficial results, BNP-backed candidate Noor Mohammad Mondal bagged 74, 952 votes while Awami League candidate Shahadat Hossain Bakul got 70,877 votes respectively in all 106 centers.
Meanwhile, thousands of supporters of the BNP-backed candidate took position on Dhaka-Rangpur highway demanding immediate declaration of the polls.
Earlier in the day, the voting was started from 8:00am to 4:00pm in the 106 polling centers of the upazila without any break.
Centering the election eight platoons army personnel and three platoons Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed in the area to avoid any untoward situation.
