Man sentenced to death for killing pregnant wife

A Chattogram court has sentenced a man to death for killing his eight-month pregnant wife.

The verdict was delivered on Monday (Feb 3) afternoon by Judge Ferdous Ara of Chattogram Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-7.

The court also fined convict Tk 5 lakh.

The convict, Md Sumon, 35, is a resident of Mirzarhat under Bhujpur Police Station in Fatikchhari upazila.

According to case statement, Sumon married Moni Akter from his locality after a love affair four years ago. However, he had been married multiple times before but kept it secret. After their marriage, Sumon frequently tortured Moni for dowry. Even after receiving a motorcycle and Tk 50,000, he continued the abuse.

On October 31, 2021, Sumon took Moni to her parental home in Bhujpur. There, he demanded more money, but when he did not get it, they had an argument on the way back. At Kalikunja in Bhujpur, he brutally tortured her. Later, he abandoned her in critical condition at Chattogram Medical College Hospital and fled. After 26 days of treatment, Moni Akter died on November 25, 2021.

On November 27, 2021, Moni’s brother, Md Abbas, filed a case. On April 16, 2022, RAB-7 arrested Sumon from the Bayezid Bostami area. The court framed charges against him on September 4, 2022.

After hearing testimonies from 13 witnesses, the court found Sumon guilty of murdering his wife and unborn child. Bench Assistant Kofil Uddin said Sumon was sentenced to death under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. The convict was present in court during the verdict and has been sent to jail.
