India to provide 100-MW power to BD

NAY PYI TAW, MYANMAR: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has promised to his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina to provide 100-Megawatt electricity from a power house of Indian state of Tripura.

Manmohan Singh came up with the commitment in a meeting with Sheikh Hasina at Myanmar International Conference Center in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday.

Both the leaders of the neighboring countries showed their gratitude to each other for the friendly relationship. Moreover, they discussed the development issues of the countries.

Personal assistant to Sheikh Hasina, M Mahbubul Haque Shakil, told banglanews that many important issues were highlighted in the sideline of the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) meeting.

He further said that Sheikh Hasina urged for a facility of 100-MW electricity from India and in a reply Manmohan promised to take immediate steps in this regard.

Sheikh Hasina underscored the recent challenges of the country such as hunger, poverty and terrorism. The challenges can be abolished by strongly encountering them and practicing fair democratic politics, she added.

She also offered a proposal of a joint construction of hydroelectric power plants for Bangladesh-India-Nepal-Bhutan for the sake of the development in power sector in the countries with a minimum cost.

Sheikh Hasina also thanked Manmohan Singh for his concern about the border protocol for the neighboring countries and hoped that they passed the matter in the Indian parliament Lok Sabha.

India premier Manmohan greeted Sheikh Hasina for her reelection as prime minister for the third time. He also praised for the contribution and achievement of Hasina government.

They also emphasized the opportunity to be strong in power, communications, business and other sectors in two countries.

The senior leaders of the countries were also present in the meeting.
