Bashundhara Kings were defeated by Dhaka Abahani 4-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the Qualifier 1 of the Bashundhara Group Federation Cup 2024-25 at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla on Tuesday.
Despite playing with a man advantage for much of the match, the defending champions couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. Abahani were reduced to ten men in the first half after defender Asaduzzaman Bablu was sent off for picking up two yellow cards.
Kings took the lead early in the second half when Brazilian Jonathan Fernandes crossed the ball into the box for Mojibur Rahman Jony, who calmly finished past the Abahani goalkeeper.
However, the goal didn’t spark the expected attacking dominance from Kings. Despite reshuffling their foreign lineup in the mid-season transfer window, they struggled to find fluidity in their play. The lack of sharpness in attack allowed Abahani to stay in the game.
Abahani, boosted by two new foreign players in the second half, mounted a strong comeback. In the 83rd minute, Brazilian Raphael Agusto’s free-kick hit the post, but Akash was quick to follow up and scored the equalizer for Abahani.
In extra time, Kings seemed less focused on creating chances compared to Abahani. They brought on goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico, known for saving penalties in high-pressure situations, in hopes of turning the tide. Zico did manage to save Abahani’s first penalty, but Kings missed two penalties of their own and ultimately lost the match.
With this win, Abahani advanced to the final, scheduled for April 22. Meanwhile, Kings will face Rahmatganj MFS, who won 2-1 against Brothers Union in the Eliminator, on April 15 in Qualifier 2.
