Jamaat-cop clash in city

DHAKA: Leaders and activists of Jamaaat-e-Islami and its students’ wing Chhtra Shibir were locked into clash with police at Nabisco Intersection at Tejgaon area of the capital on Wednesday morning.

The clash took place when Jamaat-Shibir men brought out their pre-announced protest programme at 8:00am.

Police and witnesses said about 200 Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a sudden procession in the area, which was barred by the on-duty policemen.

Later, being informed, additional police force rushed in and foiled the procession. Police fired several tear shells to disperse them.

Several Shibir men were detained and a motorcycle was seized during police action, claimed Hasibur Rahman Sagar, publicity secretary of Dhaka City North Shibir unit.

When contacted to Tejgaon Thana Officer-In-Charge, he said Shibir activists brought out a procession at 8:00am, police chased and dispersed them.

No one was detained from the procession but a motorcycle was seized, the OC added.

Jamaat-Shibir announced the demonstration for Wednesday protesting the government’s decision to provide corridor and electricity to India.
