1 awarded death penalty, 3 life

NETROKONA: A Netrokona court on Wednesday awarded death penalty to one person and three others life-term imprisonment, and two others to three years imprisonment in the much-talked-about Tofazzel Hossain killing case.

The court also fined the life-term awardees Tk 50,000, in default, to suffer five years’ imprisonment, and fined Tk 3,000 to the three years in jail awardees, in default, to suffer three months’ imprisonment.

Netrokona Additional Session Judge Abdul Hamid handed down the verdict at 12:00 noon.

The capital punishment convicts is Babul Mia, son of Sahed Mia of Dewali village of Kendua upazila of the district while the life-term convicts are Babul’s father Shahed Mia, Babul’s brother Ratan Mia, and Faruk Mia of the village.

Those were sentenced to three years are Babul’s another brother Kadir Mia and Sultan, son of Abdul Barek of the village.

The court sources said they attacked the opponents at Sohagpur Para Dewli village on February 7, 2007 in a sequel to long-standing land dispute, leaving farmers Tofazzel and Bahar critically injured.

The injured were rushed Tarail Upazila Health Complex where Tofazzel succumbed to his injures.

Following the death, victim’s son Arif filed a case with Kendua Thana accusing six people. Police submitted the charge-sheet to the court on April 23, 2007 in the case.

Finishing the hearing, the court delivered the verdict in presence of all the accused of the case on Wednesday.

Additional public prosecutor (PP) Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan moved for hearing on behalf of the plaintiff while AKM Nuruddin Nayan and Abdul Hannan for the defendants.

The PP confirmed the matter to banglanews.
