Launch capsize death toll now 13

PATUAKHALI: With recovery of five more bodies early Sunday from the spot of the launch capsize in the river Kolagachhia of the district Saturday, the death toll in the tragedy rose to 13.

Of the deceased five were identified as Riad,5 Manwara, 50, Lutfa, 50, Runia, 20 and Narayan Hawlader, 60 and others remained unidentified yet.

Kolagachhia police outpost SI Halom Khandaker confirmed the identity of the deceased. 

Deputy Commissioner of Patuakhali Amitav Sarkar told banglanews, “Navy and fire service men, during their joint rescue work that started at 5:30am, recovered four more bodies and the death toll rose to 13. And six more remained missing.”

Launch MV Shakhil-1, carrying 30-40 passengers, were going to Patuakhali from Golachipa and capsized at 3:45pm.

Golachipa Upazila Assistant Commissioner (land) and Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Kazi Sayemuzzaman told banglanews, “Rescue Ship MV Hamza left Barisal for the spot and it will take three or four hours more to reach.” 

Golachipa Police outpost Sub-Inspector Halim Khandakar confirmed the matter to banglanews.
