DHAKA: Abid opened fire and Zahid Chowdhury supplied pistol for killing Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested eight suspected killers including Abid, main planner of Ekramul killing mission, from Baridhara area of the city on Saturday morning.
Following the arrest, RAB Director (Media and Legal Wing) ATM Habibur Rahman briefed journalists the details, from planning to execution, of the killing mission at the headquarters.
He said, “On May 19, they planned the killing mission at Salam Gymnasium of the district where Sifat, Sani, Abid and others were present.”
The RAB official added: “A gang of 30 to 40 terrors participated in the killing mission in the morning of May 20 and they used five pistols.”
“Zahid Chowdhury collected the pistols and supplied those, Shiplu gave training to run the arms and Abid shot the upazila chairman,” he added.
“The gang joined in the mission dividing themselves into several groups, each of whom had definite tasks,” said the RAB director.
“The groups took positions on different roads of the district town around 8:00am of the day; they began communicating among themselves since Ekramul went out of his house.”
“Killers intercepted the car by parking several human haulers – locally known as Nosimon, Korimon, and Tempo – near Bilashi Cinema,” he added.
He also told the newsmen that people left the place when the killers exploded a few cocktails to create panic in the area.
“Four people were inside Ekramul’s car, one of whom fired from Ekramul’s licensed pistol to prevent the killer, but failed and they stepped aside,” the journalists were told.
Habibur added: “After opening fire, the murderer set fire to Ekramul’s car pouring petrol and exploded cocktails in a bid to prevent people from approaching the spot.”
He also said, “Other groups were giving protection to the killers during the mission by taking positions away from the spot.”
RAB director also said that drives were underway at different places to nab the others involved with the killing.”
