NEW YORK: Bangladesh has been elected as Vice President of the 17th NAM Conference in Algiers, the capital city of Algeria.
The four-day 17th Ministerial Non-Align Conference has started on Monday and will continue till May 29 in Algiers.
Foreign Minister of Algeria on Monday inaugurated the 2-day (May 26-27) Senior Officials level meeting and it is also being followed by 2-day High-level Ministerial Conference.
Ambassador Dr. A. K. Abdul Momen, Bangladesh Permanent Representative to the UN led the Bangladesh Senior Officials level negotiation and Foreign Minister A. H. Mahmood Ali, MP is leading the Ministerial Conference on June-28-29.
In the opening day, Bangladesh Ambassador to the UN, Dr. Abdul Momen stated that 'he is pleased to be in this very historic hall where 40 years ago, 'father of Bangladesh' Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman raised the issue of Bangladesh membership to the NAM and Bangladesh was granted the membership of this august body with consensus.
Ever since, Bangladesh has been a proactive member of this non-align group.
NAM is an organization that was established in 1961 when the world was polarized into two groups; the West and the Soviet blocks. Currently it is a group of 121 member states.
