50 Bangladeshis detained in Tunisia

DHAKA: At least 50 Bangladeshis were detained by Tunisian Coast Guard in Mediterranean Sea while trespassing to Italy on June 4.

Ahsan Kibria, first secretary (labour) at Bangladesh embassy in Libya confirming the matter said “the coast guards detained 269 people of different countries. Among them 50 are Bangladeshi who were worked in Libya.”

The number could be extended to 60. The detainees are kept in a Tunisian camp, he added.

He suspected that the detained Bangladeshis were trying to go Italy through agents for better job.

Kibria said that they are collecting information from Libyan High Commission as Tunasia has no Bangladeshi High Commission.

Many foreign workers were trapped in Libya since a war broke out in the African country in 2011. They tried to go other countries.
