NOAKHALI: A terrorist leader Abul Bashar, also a former member of Alaiyapur union parishad, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Jogikhali Pool in Begumganj upazila early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Abul Bashar alias Bashar Member, 45, ringleader of ‘Bashar Bahini’ and son of Golam Mostafa of the upazila.
He was wanted in several cases, including for murder and extortion, said police.
Four police men including two sub-inspectors were injured in the gunfight. Law enforcers, however, recovered two locally made light gun (LG), four rounds of bullet, a chopper and so on.
Confirming the matter, Begumganj thana officer-in-charge Mostafizur Rahman told banglanews police arrested Bashar from Chittagong on Friday.
As per information provided by Bashar during interrogation, police along with Bashar went to Jogikhali Pool area to recover firearms around 2.15 am.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, cohorts of Bashar opened fire at police, in retaliation, the law enforcers also fired back that triggered a gunfight.
During the gunfight, Bashar was caught in the line of fire, leaving him injured critically.
He was rushed to hospital where doctors declared him dead.
