Ferry, 7 trucks on board, capsizes

GOPALGANJ: A ferry with 7 goods-laden trucks on board capsized in Modhumoti River at Kalna ghat in Kashiani upazila of the district on Thursday morning.

Authorities concerned said the ferry was sunken due to overload while unloading the trucks at the jetty at 6:00am of the day.

Faridpur Ferry sub-divisional engineer Mozammel Hoque told banglanews, “The sunken one is a type-1 ferry, which was risky since earlier, which capsized due to overload.”

District Roads and Highways department executive engineer Samiron Ray told banglanews, “Two rescue cranes are on way to the spot from Barisal and Gopalganj.”

Rescue operation will begin upon the arrival of the cranes, he added.

Vehicular movement remains halted on Dhaka-Jessore highway in the area due to the ferry capsize. Hundreds of vehicles remain stranded on the roads in the both sides of the river.

Authorities are trying to install the engine on another ferry in a bid to resume the ferry service.
