DHAKA: Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Benazir Ahmed on Thursday said police would use its all-out power to arrest the attackers on former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) president AKM Enamul Haque Shamim.

The DMP boss came up with the assertion after visiting injured Shamin at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the city.

Benazir said, “This (shooting) is a tragic event, all-out efforts will be applied to arrest the miscreants.”

Replying a query whether police had any negligence in performing duties, the commissioner said, “We are looking into it to find out whether any police are on duty on the spot and how the miscreant managed to escape.”

Meanwhile, a four-member medical board headed by Dr Ibrahim Khalil was formed for the treatment of Shamin.

Party’s different level leaders-activists inducing state minister for home affairs Asaduzzaman Khan visited the injured Shamim.

Earlier, miscreants shot at Shamim in front of Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi area of the city on way to his Siddheswari office by his car at 9:45am. He was hit on the left hand.

Shamim was rushed to Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital later shifted to DMCH. Then he was taken to Combined Military Hospital for better treatment.

Shamim, a member of Awami League’s central committee, served as BCL president from 1994 to 1998 and was also a BCL leader of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit.

Hailing from Shariatpur, Shamim was vice president of JU Central Students’ Union from 1989 to 1991.
