DHAKA: Motiur Rahman Nizami has recovered from his illness and the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 will deliver verdict on him any day, said sources concerned.

Tribunal deputy registrar Arunabh Chakrabarty told banglanews on Thursday night that the Jail authorities submitted the medical report on Nizami’s health on the day same.

“The report signed by Senior Super of Dhaka Central Jail Forman Ali said ‘Nizami has been recovered from his illness,” added Arunabh.

However, the tribunal now could pronounce the verdicts on him any day, ICT sources said in this connection.

The three-member tribunal (ICT-1), headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, had directed the jail authorities to submit a full report on Nizami’s health.

Earlier, the ICT-1 had deferred its verdict on Nizami on June 24 as he had fallen sick due to high blood pressure.

Though the tribunal was to deliver the verdict on Nizami on that day, the jail authorities submitted a letter stating that Nizami had fallen sick and had been given sedative.

The Jamaat chief could not be produced before the tribunal because of his deteriorating physical condition.

The three-member tribunal of Justices M Enayetur Rahim, Jahangir Hossain and Anwarul Haque took more than 56 days after the rehearing of arguments were concluded on March 10.

On May 28, 2012, the tribunal indicted the Jamaat ameer for his alleged involvement in committing crimes against humanity in 1971.

On June 29, 2010, Nizami was arrested after a magistrate court in Dhaka issued warrant of arrest in connection with a criminal case over hurting religious sentiment of Muslims.

Later on July 22, the tribunal shown him arrested in connection with the war crimes case.
