BARISAL: At least 11 people were killed and 35 injured as a bus hit a crowd in an Ichladi haat beside Dhaka-Barisal Highway in Uzirpur of the district on Friday evening.

Two of the deceased were identified as Sharif and Jewel Miah.

Barisal Superintendent of police (SP) AKM Ehsanullah confirmed the death.

Witnesses said that a Barisal-bound Hanif Paribahan hit the haat as the driver lost control over the steering.

Eight shops, two local transport ‘Mishuk’ and a taxi twisted by the hit of the bus, leaving three passengers of Mishuk and two pedestrian dead on the spot.

Six of the injured succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Officer-in-Charge of Uzirpur Thana Anwar Hossain said they recovered five bodies from the spot.

Among the injured 30 people were taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical college Hospital and others whisked to the local clinics.
