2 women on remand over newborn theft

DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Friday placed two women on three-day remand for their involvement with stealing of a newborn baby from Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Joynab Begum passed the order when investigation officer (IO) of the case sub-inspector Ferdous Ara produced them before the court with seven day remand plea.

On Thursday, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) recovered the stolen baby from Gazipur a day into High Court order for judicial inquiry and detained two women named Amena Khatun and Rahima.

On August 20, Runa Akhter, a resident of Mohammadpur gave birth to twins at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Later on August 21, an unidentified a woman stole one of the babies from the hospital.

DMCH formed a probe committee and filed a case with Shahbagh Thana in this connection. 

On August 27, the High Court directed authorities concerned to conduct a judicial inquiry into the incident.
