SYLHET: Different socio-political organizations have chalked out programs in Sylhet on Sunday to celebrate the 96th birth anniversary of MAG Osmani, Liberation War Commander-in-Chief, also founder of Jatiya Janata Party (JJP).
JJP Sylhet city and district units will hold discussion and milad mahfil at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (R) in Sylhet on the occasion where former lawmaker Nurul Islam Khan, also JJP chairman, is likely to attend.
On the other hand, Bangabir Osmani Jonmobarsiki Udjapan Parishad will arrange another discussion at Dr RK Dhar Hall of Rashid Emporium, adjacent to the entrance of the shrine, at 4:00pm.
All followers and well wishers of Osmai have been requested to attend the program in due time.
Osmani was born in Sunamganj, Sylhet Division, on September 1 in 1918, General Muhammad Ataul Ghani Osmani, was a descendant of Shah Nizamuddin Osmani of Dayamir, Balaganj, who came to Sylhet with Hazrat Shah Jalal (R) in 1303.
Began military career in 1939, Osmani commanded an ASC (Army Service Corps) unit, serving in the Burma front, for the British-Indian Army during World War II and became Lieutenant Colonel just before the birth of India and Pakistan in 1947.
Bangladesh Government in Exile at Agartola made him Commander of Bangladesh Forces on April 10, 1971.
With the formation of Bangladesh government on 17 April 1971, Osmani was made Commander-in-Chief of all Bangladesh Forces under the authority of Bangladesh government, followed by promoting him to the rank of full General during the war.
