Look into Akhil Poddar assault: HC

DHAKA: The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking minister of Home Affairs to form a probe committee to look into the assault attack on Ekushey TV special Correspondent Akhil Poddar.

The HC also ordered to submit the report within four weeks.

An HC bench comprising Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Justice M Ashraful Kamal passed the order after hearing a writ petition.

The court also issued a rule asking “Why the inactivity of defendants should not be declared illegal and legal action should not be taken against them.”

Home secretary, Inspector General of Police, Kushtia Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Officer-in-Charge and Assistant Sub-Inspector of Kumarkhali Thana were made respondents to the rule.

The HC also ordered the Officer-in-Charge of Kumarkhali Police Station of Kushtia to file the First Information Report (FIR).

On August 27, police tortured journalist Akhil Poddar without any reason in Kumarkhali upazila.

Later, the law enforcers also denied taking FIR over the attack.

On Sunday morning, he filed a writ petition with the court while taking treatment in Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Lawyer Manjil Morshed moved for the plaintiff when Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Raju moved for state.

The next hearing date was fixed on September 17.
