DHAKA: Durga Puja, the largest festival for Hindu community, ended with the immersion of goddess Durga’s idols across the country.
The immersion of the goddess’ idols was started on Saturday evening, on the final day of the 10-day festivity.
With the immersion on earth the mother, Durga, returns to her husband, Shiva, according to the religion.
Following the Hindu religious calendar, Durga Puja ended Friday as the Mahanabami and the Bijayadashami were celebrated on same day.
Hundreds of Hindu devotees brought out colorful processions to join the immersion with the beats of drums, cymbals and soirees of religious songs.
The intricately designed idols of Durga and drifts of incense lent the mandaps a festive air.
Around 50-60 trucks were seen gathered with the idol of Durga in Sadarghat area of the city on the bank of the river Buriganga.
In other parts of the country, Durga idols were also immersed in rivers and ponds in the evening.
Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad president Kajal Devnath said that some 221 puja mandaps were set in city and 28,487 mandaps were set across the country.
Each of the mandaps across the country has been adorned with beautiful idols. Skilled artisans and artists have crafted those and showcased the goddess in all her glory.
On the occasion of the festivity, people of Hindu religious community arranged fairs, discussions and cultural programs with the spirit of puja.
They also distributed foods and cloths among the destitute people in different places in the country.
