Hilsa, nets worth Tk 2 cr seized on Meghna

BHOLA: Bangladesh Coast Guard have seized hilsa and nets worth about Tk 2 crore by separate drives between Friday night and Saturday noon at different points of the river Meghna in Bhola.

Sources told banglanews that the amount of the seized fishes is over 140-kg while the nets are about 3 lakh 80 thousand meters including 50 thousand meters of drift net locally called ‘current jaal’.

The fishes and nets have been seized for catching hilsa defying the government ban, sources added.

However, according to a press release sent by Bangladesh Coast Guard South Zone, the coast guard personnel, later, burnt the seized nets while the fishes had been distributed among the poor people in presence of fisheries officials.

Fisheries Department on October 5 imposed a 10-day ban on catching Hilsa with a view to ensure safe spawning of the national fish hilsa during their peak breeding period.
