Photojournalist Azizur Rahim Peu passes away

DHAKA:  Daily Observer photo editor Azizur Rahim Peu died of cardiac arrest in city early Tuesday. He was 49.

Family sources said he felt chest pain at 3:00am at his residence in West Dhanmondi area. He was immediately taken to the city’s Square Hospital where on-duty doctor pronounced him dead.

His first namaj-e-janaza was held at West Dhanmondi Mosque at 11.00am followed by the second janaza on National Press Club premises after juhr prayer.

The body will be kept at the mortuary of BIRDEM hospital.

Peu’s burial will be performed in Rangpur on October 20 after his brothers and sisters arrive home from abroad.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her deep shock and condolence at the demise of Peu.

Peu left behind his wife, a daughter, a son, relatives, friends and host of admirers to mourn his death.

Hailing from Rangpur, he began his career in photojournalism with the Bangla daily Ittefaq in 1988. Peu was the founding director of DrikNEWS, a Bangladesh-based news photo agency.

He taught at photography training institute Pathshala and a member of Bangladesh Photographic Society (BPS). He also worked with Bangla daily Shokaler Khobor.

Peu authored two books ‘Chobi Alor Bhasha’, a book on photojournalism and another book on ‘street children’.

He was also the editor and publisher of "Baher Shongbad", a daily published from Rangpur.
