Writ challenging 16th Amendment filed

DHAKA: A writ petition was filed with the High Court challenging the legality of the 16th amendment of the Constitution restoing parliament’s authority to impeach judges for misconduct.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Dr Md Yunus Ali Akand filed the writ with the concerned department of the HC on Wednesday morning.

He, in the petition, also sought its directives for the cancellation of the 16th amendment to the constitution.

Cabinet secretary, parliament secretariat secretary, Election Commission and other authorities concerned were made defendants in the writ.

On September 17, the parliament passed the 16th constitutional amendment bill rejecting all calls for soliciting public opinion.

A gazette notification was issued on September 22 on the Constitution (Amendment) Act-2014.

The petitioner also has challenged the legality of gazette published by the Election Commission on January 5 elections.
