DHAKA: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on Wednesday started pronouncing the verdict in war crimes case against Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami.
The three-member tribunal Justice Anwarul Haque has started reading out the 204 page verdict after 11am.
Earlier Nizami was produced at the dock at 11:04am.
Earlier the tribunal put the verdict on CAV (Curia advisari vult, a Latin term for legal affairs literally means “the court wishes to be advised” used when court awaits verdict) as the trial proceedings ended on March 24.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Nizami, 69, is facing 16 charges of wartime offences -- conspiracy, planning, incitement and active participation in killing, rape, loot, forced deportation, arson -- committed allegedly during Liberation War in 1971.
The 16 charges against Nizami are:
Charge 1
Mawlana Kasim Uddin, the then headmaster of Pabna Zilla School, was involved in pro-liberation campaign. On June 4, 1971 Pakistan forces picked up him. In the presence Nizami, the teacher was tortured near Nurpur Power House. Later on June 10, at least 10 people, including Mawlana Kasim, were killed on the bank of Ichamati River.
Charge 2
On May 10, 1971 Nizami had a meeting with the local members of peace committee and Rajakar at Ruposhi primary school at Bousgari village at Sathia in Pabna where he announced that Pakistan forces would come to the area to ensure peace. According to the plan, the Pakistany army attacked the village and killed 400 people. Rajakars also violated 30 to 40 women there.
Charge 3
Mohammadpur Physical Training Institute was the camp of Pakistani occupation forces during the period from May to 16 December, 1971. Later, Rajakar and Al-Badr also set up their camps at the place. Nizami regularly visited the camp, hatched conspiracy to commit crimes against humanity.
Charge 4
Habibur Rahman Sarder, an inhabitant of Karamja village in Pabna, was killed by a group of Razakars at the order of Nizami.
On May 8, Nizami’s Al-Badr forces cordoned the village and killed nine people. Later, they abused a woman apart from looting and torching several houses
Charge 5
On April 16, 1971, Pakistan troops with the help of Nizami killed 21 civilians at Arparha and Bhuter Barhi villages at Ishwardi in Pabna. Later, collaborators looted and torched houses in the area.
Charge 6
At the behest of Nizami’s instruction, Rajakars and Pak Army raided Dhulaurha village of Pabna to trace freedom fighters on Nov 27, 1971. Later, they killed 52 people including women and children of the village. One victim was identified as Dr Abdul Awal. The houses were looted and set ablaze.
Charge 7
On December 3, 1971, as per information given by Nizami, the Pakistan troops cordoned Brishalikha village in Pabna and killed one Sohrab Ali in presence of his wife and children.
Charge 8
On Aug 30, 1971, being instigated by Nizami, Pak forces killed several youths including Shafi Imam Rumi, Badi, Jalal who were detained at the old MP Hostel at Nakhalpara of Dhaka.
Charge 9
Being informed by Nizami, Pak army cordoned Brishalika village of Berha Upazila in Pabna and killed 70 people on Dec 12, 1971. They also torched 72 houses there.
Charge 10
At the behest of Nizami’s order, local Razakars torched the house of one Anil Chandra Kundu who fled to India at Sonatola in Sathia.
Charge 11
On August 3, 1971, Nizami addressed a meeting organised by Islami Chhatra Sangha at Chittagong Muslim Institute and termed Pakistan as Allar Ghar (house of Allah). Allah is protecting the house by Pakistan Army. There is no power on earth that can destroy Pakistan, he added.
Charge 12
On August 22, 1971, Nizami, at Islamic Academy Hall in Dhaka University in a program for commemoration of Al Madani, incited Muslims to drive out enemy of Pakistan.
Charge 13
On September 8, 1971, Nizami at a meeting of Chhatra Sangha marking the Defence Day of Pakistan said Rajakar and Al Badr are prepared to attack the main land of Hindu.
Charge 14
On September 10, 1971, Nizami at a public meeting at the Rajakar’s Jessore district headquarters called upon Rajakars to discharge their duties imbued with religious spirit. Through this, Nizami instigated the Jamaat and its auxiliary forces to commit crimes against humanity.
Charge 15
Local Rajakar set up their camp at Sathia Pilot High School during a period from May to December 16. Nizami held several meetings with Rajakar Samad Mia at the camp resulting crimes against humanity in the area.
Charge 16
Al Badr killed innumerous intellectuals of the country. As the head of Al Badr, Nizami was responsible for the killing of intellectuals.
Nizami was the head of Islami Chhatra Sangha (ICS), student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islmai’s East-Pakistan unit.
He was the chief of Al Badr, the infamous collaborator organization of Jamaat, till September in 1971.
On June 29, 2010, Nizami was arrested after a magistrate court in Dhaka had issued an arrest warrant in connection with a criminal case over hurting religious sentiment of Muslims.
Later on July 22 in 2010, the tribunal shown him arrested in the war crimes case.
On May 28, 2012, the tribunal indicted the Jamaat Ameer for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
