Indefinite vessel strike across country

CHITTAGONG: Water transport workers have enforced a non-stop countrywide strike since Saturday morning.

Sources told banglanews that the workers, however, suspended loading and unloading operations at all the ports including Chittagong demanding security measures on waterways.

On the other hand, water transports have also been halted from 6:00am due to the strike, sources added.

However, water transport workers enforced the strike following a robbery in a lighter vessel named ‘Karnaphuli’ at Battir Khal area of Lakshmipur early Saturday.

Moreover, seven workers and crew of the vessel are reportedly missing since the robbery.

Confirming the matter, Bangladesh Noujan Sramik Federation joint-secretary Khorshed Alam complained that police take little actions into the matter whereas the vessel workers are regularly being victims of harassment including robbery one after another.

“They don’t even let us to file general diary,” he alleged.

Nevertheless, the workers, in this regard, also demanded prime minister’s intervention.
