DHAKA: Leftwing protestors Tuesday alleged that the government is violating the constitution through the handover of power and energy sector to the private sector.  

They said the government has to keep power and energy turfs under the public sector if it wants to abide by articles 7, 13, 16 and 143 of the constitution.

The leaders of the National Committee to Protect Oil-Gas, Mineral Resources and Power-Ports made the allegation a daylong seminar on ‘Energy Resources, Energy Crisis and Energy Security: Policy, Agreement, Organization and Ownership’ at the Mukti Bhaban in the city with its Convener Engineer Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah in the chair.

Speakers predicted that “there would be no power stations and gas plants under public sector if the present flow of privatization continues and the country has to depend on the multinational companies for power and energy”.  

They also demanded cancellation of the Production Sharing Contract (PSC) used for making deals with the international exploration companies.

They also asked the government no to set up nuclear power station unless its proper waste management is ensured.

Member-Secretary of the National Committee Professor Anu Muhammad, Engineer M Inamul Haque, Nur Mohammad and Professor Shamsul Alam, among others, attend the seminar.
