DHAKA: Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Monday said it is not necessary to take the Speaker’s permission in arresting Latif Siddique.
She made the comment Monday afternoon before starting the Parliament session.
Shirin said it requires Speaker’s nod while arresting a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Parliament lobby, gallery or from their chamber.
“Except these issues there is no necessity of taking the Speaker’s permission before arresting an MP,” she added. “But, the law enforcers have to inform the Speaker after arresting an MP and the Speaker will read it out at the Parliament”.
Mentioning ‘the information of state minister for home affairs was incorrect’ the Speaker further said that there is only provision to not to arrest a sitting MP before and after 14 days of session.
According to the Speaker, “the Acts of 1963 and 1965 have created misunderstanding about the arrest of Latif Siddique”.
On the other hand, the Speaker to a question said she knows nothing whether Latif Siddique is asked to be removed from the MP post or not.
She, moreover, added that even she knew nothing before Latif Siddique’s Sunday’s return.
However, Latif Siddique was sacked from the ruling Awami League cabinet, expelled from the party presidium membership and later from the party for his derogatory comments religious rituals.
