Oil-tanker sinks in Sundarbans

BAGERHAT: An oil-tanker, carrying 350,000 litres oil for a power plant in Gopalganj, sank in a river near Chandpai range of Sundarbans after being hit by another tanker early Tuesday.

All of nine crews but its master Mokhlesur Rahman, 50, managed to swim to the bank.

Joint secretary of Bangladesh Water Transports Labourers’ Association Abul Kashem Master confirmed the matter to banglanews.

Coast Guard, forest department and local divers started operation for rescuing the missing sailor and the tanker.

DFO of East Sundarbans Forest Department Amir Hossain Chowdhury said a team was on the way to check whether the emitted oil will affect the natural bio-diversity.
