DHAKA: District Transport Owners-Workers Association has called an indefinite transport strike in the district from Sunday morning protesting the reckless extortion on the roads.
Earlier on Tuesday, they body gave an ultimatum of a week to the administration through a press conference to press home their demands.
Association member secretary Muhammad Yunus Mia said that their strike would continue across the district until the administration meets their demands.
He alleged that the transport owners and workers are forced to pay extortion on Khagrachhari-Chittagong-Dhaka and inter-district routes while plying the vehicles.
The workers are often beaten if they refuse to give the money to the extortionists and they vandalize vehicles and snatch their legal papers, he added.
He also claimed that the administration is aware about the matter but hardly takes any action in this matter.
Earlier in July, the transport owners and workers enforced a strike in this regard.
