Jihad laid to rest

SHARIATPUR: The ill-fated boy Jihad was laid to rest at family graveyard in Nagarpara village under Goshaier Hat Thana of Shariatpur on Sunday evening.

Earlier, his maternal uncle Monir Hossain brought Jihad’s body here after the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) authorities handed over the kid’s body in the morning after completing all formalities including autopsy.

However, according to the post mortem report, Jihad died of drowning in the water after suffering head injury inside the 400 feet deep pipe.

Jihad’s Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Nagarpara Bohumukhi High School ground in the afternoon. Thousands of people, from all walks of life attended the prayer.

The ill fated kid fell inside the 17-inch diameter shaft, around 40 yards from his house in Shahjahanpur of the capital, on Friday afternoon, while playing with other children.

Fire service and Civil Defense failed to rescue him after 23 hours frantic effort and called off the operation.

Just after 15 minutes, when the fire service authorities left the hope of rescuing the boy, three local pump cleaners -- Rahmat, Abdullah Al Mamun and Sujan Das -- rescued the kid by their brave effort.

But, immediately after he had been rescued, the trapped four-year-old Jihad was declared dead at DMCH on Saturday afternoon.
