ICT reading out Azharul verdict

DHAKA: International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT) has started reading out its verdict in war crimes cases against Jamaat Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam on Tuesday.

ICT-1 chairman Justice Enayetur Rahimon has been reading the summary of 158-page verdict.

Earlier in the day, Azharul was taken to the court around 10:53am.

On Monday, the tribunal kept the case on the top of the cause list for Tuesday.

On September 18, the court kept the judgment ‘CAV’ (curia advisari vult or keeping the judgment until a later time).

ATM Azhar is facing a total of six different charges of “crimes against humanity” committed during the War of Independence in 1971, including abduction, confinement, torture, killing, conspiracy and genocide.

Investigation agency quizzed Azhar at ‘Safe Home’ on February 11 this year.

Azhar was arrested from his residence in the city’s Moghbazar area hours after the tribunal issued an arrest warrant against him on August 22, 2012.
