DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced Salauddin Shoib Chowdhury, the editor of English weekly Blitz, to four years rigorous imprisonment for money scam.

Metropolitan Magistrate Molla Saiful Alam handed down the verdict in presence of Shoib.

The Blitz editor was arrested in a case filed by Bangladesh Center for International Studies Chairman Sazzad Hossain in October in 2012 accusing Shoib on charge of embezzling Tk 69 lakh.

Salauddin Shoib’s wife Shahnaz Chowdhury was also accused in the case, however, she had been fugitive from then.

The court acquitted his wife Shahnaz Chowdhury of the charge.

According to the case allegations, the plaintiff Sazzad Hossain and the Shoib couple were friends.

Sazzad Hossain and Shahnaz Chowdhury were supposed to invest Tk 70 lakh in the business. But Shahnaz along with his husband Shoib conned him and embezzled Tk 69 lakh from their joint account.

However, the plaintiff made contact several times with them but they started bluffing to him to return the money.

Finding on other way, the plaintiff lodged the case against them, according to the plaintiff.

Blitz Editor Salahuddin Shoib Choudhury was also awarded to another seven years’ imprisonment in a case over a controversial article in last year.
