Janakantha rule verdict Thursday

DHAKA: The Supreme Court (SC) will pronounce the verdict of the contempt rule against Bangla daily ‘Janakantha’ editor-publisher Atiquallah Khan Masud and its executive editor Swadesh Roy on Thursday.

The six-member larger bench of the Appellate Division heard the explanation of the Janakantha editor-publisher and executive editor regarding the rule.

On July 29, the court issued the rule against them over an article published in the daily regarding a meeting between judges and family members of death row convict war criminal Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.

On July 16, the daily published an article that raised questions how the family members of convicted war criminal met SC judges.

The article written by Swadesh Roy, headlined ‘Activities of SQ family: Escape Route Narrowed’.

After upholding the death penalty of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, a four-member Appellate Division bench, led by the Chief Justice SK Sinha issued the order asking ‘Janakantha’ editor and its executive editor to explain about the matter.
