Lighter ship sinks off Sandwip

CHITTAGONG: A cement clinker-laden lighter ship capsized near number 2 bouy in Bhasanachar of Sandwip on Chittagong-Azad bazar sea-route.

The ship--NV Master Shohag-- sank off the Bay of Bengal on Friday noon. But 11 sailors on board the ship was rescued, said Akkas Ali, joint director Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

The lighter ship, carrying clinker, starting from Chittagong port, was heading to Azad bazar of Sandwip, he added.

Before the full tide, the ship tried to cross the buoy. During the stormy sea, NV Master Shohag had begun to slowly sink tilting to one side, the BIWTA officer further said.

“Noticing the incident, sailors of another ship ‘Mercantile -8’, which was passing through the sea route, rescued the sailors on board the sunken vessel,” Akkas Ali added.
