1100MW from India by 2017

DHAKA: India power secretary PK Sinha on Thursday said Bangladesh will receive 1100MW electricity from his country within 2017.

He was talking to the journalists after attending Bangladesh-India Joint Steering Committee Meeting at Bidyut Bhaban in city this afternoon.

The committee held two meetings in the morning and afternoon to evaluate the advancement of power supply from India to Bangladesh.

Power secretaries of India and Bangladesh PK Sinha and Monwarul Islam respectively led their respective sides in the meeting.

It was informed in the meeting that 100MW electricity in addition to 500MW will be imported from Bahrampur of India by the November-December this year.

Moreover, 30-40MW electricity will be imported through the power line between Bheramara of Bangladesh and Bahrampur of India.

The delegations also discussed the advancement of proposal to set up a multi-terminal HVDC (High-voltage direct current) power distribution line to connect the north and north-east part of India with Bangladesh, and the advancement of 1320MW power plant at Rampal in Khulna of Bangladesh.

Deputy High Commissioner of India Sandeep Chakravorty and joint secretary of India’s power division Jayati Arora, among others, were present in the meeting.

The eight-member Indian delegation reached Bangladesh on Wednesday (May 13) and they are scheduled to return home on May 15.
