Circus elephant kills 3 in Bagerhat

BAGERHAT: Three persons including two women were killed as an elephant of a circus troupe attacked in several villages under Mollahat Upazila of the district Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Mizanur Rahman, 45, of Basabati, and Kusum Bishwas, 61, wife of Jatindranath of Kahalpur area of Mollahat Upazila and Monowar Begum, 45, of Jatrabpur area of Sadar Upazila.

Police sources said that the circus elephant from Ghonapara of neighboring Gopalganj district crossed Modhumati River and attacked several villages including Mollahat Sadar, Kahalpur, Garfa and Basabati around 7:45am, leaving two women dead on the spots and a man injured critically.

Mizanur Rahman was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex where he succumbed to his injuries there.

Mollahat Thana Officer-In-Charge (OC) ANM Khairul Islam confirmed the matter to banglanews.

However, locals trapped the elephant inside a garden in the area till the filing of this report.
