DHAKA: A total of 9,593 Bangladeshi peacekeepers are currently working in 122 countries.

Speakers made the disclosure at a seminar on ‘Success of Bangladesh in United Nations Peacekeeping Mission’ at Dhaka Reporters Unity on Wednesday.

Foreign ministry assistant secretary Abdul Wadud said Bangladesh has earned success in UN peacekeeping mission. ‘Women of our country can play an important role in this sector,’ he added, ‘Obstacles in recruiting more women should be removed to increase their presence in the missions’.

Workers leaders Mokaddem Hossain, Lovly Yasmin and women rights leader Nurunnahar Mary, among others, were present at the seminar.

According to the speakers, members of Bangladesh armed forces are being praised for their honesty, qualification and sacrifice in peacekeeping missions. They have earned UN peace awards, they said.

Moreover, Bangladesh is the largest peacekeepers providing country. It is also one of the biggest sectors of earning foreign exchange.
