DHAKA: The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) distributed aid to 3,000 families displaced by floods in Ramu upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
In response to an appeal from the local administration and public representatives, UNHCR on July 4 provided 600 plastic sheets, 1200 jerry cans, 1000 solar lanterns and six bales of clothes.
‘UNHCR expresses its deep sympathy with the people who have been affected by the heavy rains and floods and lost their homes and belongings. We have tried to help in any way we can to alleviate their suffering,’ said UNHCR Representative in Bangladesh Stina Ljungdell.
The latest flooding in south-eastern Bangladesh have drowned hundreds of villages and left more than 200,000 people stranded in Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts, according to government officials.
According to government of Bangladesh’s estimate, 300-500,000 undocumented Rohingya live in the area, including 32,000 refugees in two official camps, the release added.
