One killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

KUSHTIA: A regional leader of banned outfit Purba Bangla Communist Party (M-L) was killed in a gunfight with police in Mirpur area of the district early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Palash Malitha, 28, son of Abul Malitha of Khamarpara Village of Mirpur.

Police said a gang of extremists was trying to commit robbery, putting barricade on Kushtia-Meherpur road around 2pm. Acting on tip off, Mirpur Thana police cordoned them.

At one stage, extremists opened fire on lawmen. When police retaliated with gunshots, all but Palash managed to flee the spot.

Later, injured bullet-hit Palash was rushed to Mirpur upazila health complex where doctor declared him dead.

The body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Mirpur Thana officer-in-charge (OC)  kazi Jalal Uddin Ahmed told banglanews that Palash was accused in 12 cases, including killing, firearms and bombing.
