72 villages inundated in Sherpur

SHERPUR: At least 72 villages have been inundated in three upazilas of Sherpur district as water level in the river Brahmaputra has raised.

Local sources said that flood has inundated 16 villages in Nalitabari upazila, 34 in Jhinaigati and 22 in Sribordi upazilas destroying about 23,000 acres of aman field and hampering cultivation of other crops.

They said that continuous rains and flash-flood have increased the water-level of the Brahmaputra.

Sribordi upazila agriculture officer Mohammad Korban Ali told banglanews that about 5,000 hectares of aman crops have come under water and if the rains and flash flood continue it will add more loss.

District fisheries official Mohammad Golam Mustafa Akand informed banglanews that around 4,140 ponds have been affected by the flood triggering a loss of Tk 9-crore.
