PM asks for gender parity

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday urged the world leaders to take effective measures to ensure gender parity for making the world a better place to live.

The PM was addressing a meeting of the global leaders on “Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: A Commitment to Action”, at UN Head Quarters on Friday.

 UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women) and China jointly organized the high-level meeting.

Expressing her government’s strong political will to go forward with gender equality, she also vowed to work for the socioeconomic and political empowerment of the women.

She also said her government would create more scopes for women to ensure their access to politics and business.

Bangladesh was committed to work for removing all forms of discrimination against women.

She expressed her optimism to create a safer environment for the country’s women and girls to achieve a positive change.

Sheikh Hasina also cited her government’s initiatives to eliminate child marriage by 2041 apart from giving attention to maternal health and nutrition.

Regarding Sustainable Development Agenda of the United Nations General Assembly, the PM on Friday said, it would help bring a positive change in the lives of women folks.

Chinese President Xi Jinping presided over the session.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and heads of state and government also attended the discussion.
