BHOLA: Members of Coast Guard have detained 55 fishermen from the river Meghna in Manpura upazila of Bhola district for catching hilsa fish defying the government ban.

Moreover, the law enforcers seized 150 pieces of hilsa fish, 20,000 miters of fine net and seven trawlers from the possession of the detainees.

Confirming the matter, Coast Guard (South Zone) operation officer Lieutenant Mojahidur Rahman said they conducted drives from Monday morning to Tuesday morning in the river Meghna near Manpura.

The detainees have been produced before the mobile court, he added.

However, the government has imposed a ban on catching hilsa fish in the rivers from September 25 to October 9 considering the time as the fish’s breeding season.

Police, Coast Guard and fisheries department have been conducting joint drives to save hilsa fish since the date of the ban.
