Govt to look after orphans

DHAKA: Pledging to take responsibilities of orphans, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government has assumed power to serve the nation in lieu of misappropriating the money of orphans.

She said, ‘I have taken office to do something for the welfare of orphans as I also lost my father and mother. None, except my sister Rehana and I, can realize more the dilemma of orphans’.

The premier made this assertion at inaugural program of ‘National Social Service Day and Social Service Week’ at Osmani Memirial Auditorium in city on Saturday.

Sheikh Hasina said, ‘The Awami League (AL) government has taken the responsibilities of orphans and I also took it. Our main goal is the improvement of lifestyle of every one. And we're working towards to meet up the goal’.

Reminding social work as duty of politicians, the Prime Minister said, ‘The main goal of our politics is to serve the nation’.

The Prime Minister briefed the various steps taken by her government for the welfare of the disadvantaged population.

She said, ‘We are working for poor, disadvantaged and people with disabilities as well. We are providing allowance to widows and destitute women’.

‘Almost a half million people have been resettled under rehabilitation project. We are providing assistance from housing fund to the destitute who are getting land to build their houses.’

With Social Welfare state minister Promode Mankin in the chair, the program was also addressed by president of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Welfare Mozammel Hossain, secretary Tariqul Islam and Social Welfare Department director general Gazi Mohammad Nurul Kabir, among others.
