DHAKA: Foreign Minister A H Mahmood Ali put emphasis on collective role of international community to address Rohingya Muslim issue.
The issue of plight of the Rohingyas in Myanmar came up in the discussion during a meeting with Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyad Ameen Madani, at his office at the General Secretariat in Jeddah on January 7.
Appreciating commendable role by Secretary General and his Special envoy on the matter, A H Mahmood Ali collective role of international community to address this issue, said a press release of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Bangladesh an active member of OIC contact group on Rohingya issue.
He highlighted measures taken by the government of Bangladesh to resolve the matter with a constructive dialogue with government of Myanmar, which is expected to get due importance after assumption of the office by new government there led by Aung San Suu Kyi of NLD.
In the talks, they also discussed issues of common interest of OIC Member States.
In the meeting, the Foreign Minister offered readiness of the government to extend full support to the cause of Muslim Ummah where OIC has been engaged.
He briefed the Secretary General about initiatives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for socio-economic development of the country.
He said that Bangladesh under Sheikh Hasina's visionary leadership has been making efforts for peace and development referring to the initiative to adoption of UNGA resolution of Culture of Peace and non-violence earlier at the UN in 1999.
The Secretary General briefed Bangladesh minister about the OIC’s priorities and the forthcoming summits and conferences.
He reaffirmed the OIC’s interest to continue its engagement with Bangladesh to enhance peace and development as well as political stability across the Muslim world.
