Road mishaps claim 8,642 lives in 2015

DHAKA: As many as 8,642 people were killed and 21,855 were injured in 6,581 road accidents in the country in 2015.

Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh (PWAB) disclosed the matter while presenting ‘Bangladesh Road Accident Monitoring Report-2015’ in a press conference at National Press Club in city on Saturday (January 9).

PWAB secretary general Mozammel Haque Chowdhury presented the report.

Mentioning that so far 1,305 people have lost their limbs, the report said majority of these accidents claimed lives of the only earning member of the family that pushed these families below poverty line.

Mozammel Haque further said some 1,185 buses, 1,056 trucks or covered vans, 852 private cars-microbuses, 1,678 auto-rickshaws, 1,771 motorcycles, 1,071 battery¬-run auto-rickshaws and 1,905 human haulers faced accidents in 2015.

“As many as 1,080 students, 305 teachers, 133 journalists, 109 doctors, 124 lawyers, 106 engineers, 535 transportation workers and 519 drivers, 280 law enforcers, 801 political leaders and activists across parties, 2,241 pedestrians, 261 government employees, 1,677 women and 1,122 children were victims of road accidents,” he added.
